The image size is always set to LARGE and the quality to JPEG FINE or TIFF (D300 and D700 only). The images are edited with GIMP, scaled down to 1500 x 1000, slightly sharpened, and finally converted to JPEG (quality setting 90% - 95%).
If you have these prerequisites, temporarily remove the Status Bar of Firefox and the scroll bars will disappear. Now you can enjoy the slide shows without the need of scrolling.
The slide show images are presented with a special PHP script. When you advance to the next frame, the script calls itself with the new image and the new text. It makes use of prefetch, i.e. while you view a picture, the next one is being downloaded. Not all browsers support prefetch, Mozilla Firefox does. All pages of my web site are written in Valid XHTML 1.0 Strict which, unfortunately, is not fully implemented by all browsers. Mozilla Firefox displays my web site correctly.
