This is an example of simple solarization. The dark areas of the mountain are reversed in value and, surprisingly, the darker areas of the glacier change color to dark red, creating the illusion of fiery lava.

The photograph was taken in June 2008 in Greenland. The camera used was a Nikon D300 with a Nikkor 17-55mm 1:2.8 lens (set at f = 55mm, 35mm equivalent is 84 mm).

Creation of the solarized image was done by applying the Curves tool of GIMP to the image, setting see screen shot.

Finally, The image was scaled down, slightly sharpened (Unsharp Mask: Radius 1, Amount 0.35, Threshold 5) and converted to JPEG (Quality 95 %).
